Civil engineers at Silverwood Colliery, South Yorkshire, 1954. Artist: Michael Walters

Civil engineers at Silverwood Colliery, South Yorkshire, 1954. Civil engineers excavating a pit during the refurbishment of Silverwood Colliery in December of 1954. The engineers are using pneumatic picks which do not have silencers fitted and there is also a complete lack of saftey equipment provided for the workers. There was a spate of claims in the 1990s for 'vibration white finger', a condition caused by the prolonged use of this type of equipment.
