Her head is richly adorned, and herneck also graced with a necklace of tworows. The resemblance to an antiquepattern of Astarte, Goddess of the Sido-nians and Assyrians, is most striking tothe Egyptologist. The Phoenician originof these remains has always been a fa-vorite theory of the Spanish scientists, notwithstanding the fanatic zeal of theSpanish conquerors of Mexico in in-juring these most interesting struct-ures, of what Stephens calls an archi-tecture of Greek Antique. It is an in-teresting fact, as showing the close resem-blance in the sculptured Gods of theEast, that the Sepoy regiments, whenbrought from India to Egypt, recognizedthe divinities of their distant countryamong the sculptured heads of the Tem-ple of Derdera,1 which they worshippedas sacred as their own God Vishnu. VonHumboldt says of this statue, in his EssaiPolitique, it bears a great resemblanceto the autica head of Isis. i See illustration of the Temple of Derder
