Great careshould be exercised in this respect with planting in cities where we havesuch a great amount of gas as there are a great many species which areunable to resist its poisonous effects, I have very often observed, es-pecially in New York City,the great quanity of beautiful trees that havebeen destroyed of their beauty by these gaseus effects. I have particular-ly noticed that the family of Poplars make the most desirable trees forstreet planting in cities, where it is quite natural that trees must under-go considerable abuse and neglect.
