The Abolitionists - The first martyr. The Reverend Elijah Parish Lovejoy was the editor of the Alton Observer. In an editorial dated 20 July 1837 he stated 'Abolitionists hold that all men are born free and equal, endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, among which are life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness. After this was published he was shot in his newspaper office and his press dumped in the Mississippi by a drunken 'posse'.
