John Tyler,- theVice-President, succeeded him in the Presidential elected by the Whigs, he was a Democrat in polit-. ^ William Henry Harrison was born in Virginia in 1773 His fatherwas governor of Virginia. He entered the army in 1791, took part inGeneral Waynes campaign against the Indians, and occupied severalprominent positions in the Northwest. His military service duringMadisons administration has been described under that heading. Hewas a Presidential candidate in 1836 and was elected in 1840, but thepressure of office-seekers proved too much for his strength, and hedied in a month. * John Tyler, who succeeded Harrison as President, was born in Vir-ginia in 1790. He was a prominent member of the State Rights party,and though elected Vice-President by the Whigs retained the free-tradeprinciples of his party. He was the first Vice-President who succeededto the Presidency. In 1861 he presided over the peace convention atWashington. He afterward joined the Confederacy, and died in 1862in.
