There is a form of surface treatment which is largely for the purposeof dust prevention, but which may gradually accumulate a bindinglayer when material containing an asphaltic base is used. Thetheory of this treatment is to supply a liquid which binds sufficientdust to prevent it from being raised by air currents from the roadsurface. The simplest method is to sprinkle the road with water, butthis means repeated applications during the summer season, and theexpense upon country roads is prohibitive. Various hygroscopicsalts have been used, particularly calcium chloride. These salts havethe property of absorbing water from the air and they serve, whenapplied dry or when mixed with water, to hold moisture in thesurface of the road and prolong the period of dustlessness. Drygranulated calcium chloride has been used on New York State roads, where it has been applied at the rate
