Street Children from Kolkata (Calcutta) India

It is thought that there may be about 50,000 street children in Calcutta. They live where they can: on the streets, railway platforms, under bridges, and inside sewage pipes laid out for construction. They go around doing any odd jobs that will help them to survive. They are often to be found begging or picking through the huge amounts of rubbish that fill the city, they look for anything that may have a value in the recycling market. The children wander through the city trying to make a living from their harsh environment. Too often they are drawn into a world of crime or prostitution and many are physically and sexually abused, trafficking of vulnerable children is only too common.
