A textbook of obstetrics . embrane uponwhich the ovule rests, formerlycalled membrana decidua serotina, might be more properly termed, asit is by the French, the placentaldecidua, for it is upon this spot thatthe placenta will be developed ; thatportion of the membrane whicharches over the ovule, called byHunter the decidua reflexa, is better named the ovular or epi-chorial decidua ; and that portion of the mucous membrane thatremains as at first, attached to the uterine wall, the decidua veraof I lunter, is more appropriately spoken of as the uterine changes that occur in this last division of the uterine mucousmembrane as pregnancy advances are, up to a certain point, only acontinuation of the change already noted. The large cells alreadyreferred to, the decidual cells of Friedlander, multiply with greatrapidity and constitute a thick layer,—the upper portion, or com-pact layer, of tin: uterine decidua. The glands which at first sendtheir ducts up through the cellular layer of decidua are at last.
