The flywheel is of thelaminated type, the rim consisting of segments of !^-in. steel plateabout 3 ft. long. These are assembled in sets of four, so that thecross section of the rim shows at least three solid plates out ofevery four. Cover plates are placed on the outside of the thin seg-ments, the whole being held together by ij^-in. bolts, with the endsriveted. The laminated segments are dovetailed on both concaveand convex edges; the dovetails on the inner edge engage overcorresponding projections on the spoke castings, while those in theouter edge serve to hold the field pole pieces. This construction -•i, •. HIGH PRESSURE STEAM PIPING. except when starting the engine; Bundy traps are provided to drainthe separators. The valves throughout are of the Crane make, all high-pressurevalves in pipes above 8 in. in diameter having by-pass. For the steam-driven exciter unit a 4-in. lead is taken from themain header. In this is a 4-in. .Straight Line separator. There are now installed three main generator units, each con-sisting of an Allis-Corliss vertical cross-compound condensing en-gine direct connected to a G. E. 3,500-kw. three-phase flywheel typealternator. Current is generated at 34 2-3 cycles, this periodicitybeing chosen to permit the operation of the plant in multiple withthe companys water power plant. It will be remembered that thewater power plant was designed in 1897, and at that time 25 cycleshad not become so widely accepted as standard for railway was, consequently, at that time no reason for not adopting34 2-3, for which the hydraulic appa
