View of the early-evening Seattle skyline and waterfront taken from Elliott Bay. Seattle is a major city and seaport located in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. The tallest tower is the 1201 Third Avenue Tower. it is the second tallest skyscraper in the downtown Seattle skyline. Standing at a height of 235 metres (770 ft), and containing 55 stories, it is also the eighth tallest skyscraper on the West Coast. Construction began in 1986 and finished in 1988. It was designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates and The McKinley Architects. The building was the world headquarters of the financial company Washington Mutual from the building's opening until the company moved into the WaMu Center across the street in 2006. Situated in the western part of Washington state on an isthmus between Puget Sound (an arm of the Pacific Ocean) and Lake Washington, about 100 miles (160 km) south of the Canada – United States border, it is named after Chief Seattle, of the Duwamish and Suquamish tribes. The encompassing Seattle–Tacoma–Bellevue metropolitan statistical area is the 15th largest in the United States, and the largest in the northwestern United States.[7] The major economic, cultural and educational center in the region, Seattle is the county seat of King County. As of 1 April 2009, the city had an estimated municipal population of 602,000
