Oct. 30, 1839. 814 An infant, d. Sept. 16, 1824, General Lafayette arrived in Poughkeep-sie on the steamer James Kent, and was received by several reg-iments of militia commanded by Gen. Brush, and a greatcrowd of people. The procession moved up Main Street toAcademy Street, and down Cannon to Forbus Hotel, where hewas received by the Trustees of the village. At that time Sol-omon Vail Frost was the President of the village, but he beinga Quaker would not ride in a procession where there was a brassband and a regiment of militia. The party proceeded to the. Vail Frost(No. ;258) Fifth Generation lOT Poughkeepsie Hotel, where sixty-five sat down to Gen. Lafayette was Major Swartwout, a Revolution-ary soldier ninety-five years of age. Solomon Frost loaned hishorses and carriage for Gen. Lafayette to ride in.
