There willbe nine cars, each equipped with fourtoo horse power motors and capable ofniaintaining a speed of from 50 to 55miles per hour on a level track. Thesecars will be operated either singly orin multiple unit trains, as occasion mayrequire, and will be run on hourly orhalf-hourly headway. Electric powerfor operating the line will be purchasedfrom one of the central station compa-nies in Baltimore. Such freight as it maj be necessaryto handle over both of these lines willbe moved, for the present at least, bymeans of steam locomotives. Another instance of the growing ap-preciation of the advantages of elec-trical operation, even where the hand-ling of freight is an important consid-eration, is the new Palouse and Colfaxline of the Spokane and Inland Empire. FIC. i;. COM-1>0UND WOUND. FIG. 13. SEPAR-ATELY EXCITED. at 45,000 volts to eleven transformersfbstations along the line, where it isreduced to 6,600 volts for use on thetrolley. The present equipment con-sists of 13 passenger cars, eachequipped with four 100 horse powermotors, which will be operated in threecar trains composed of two motor carsand one trailer. There arc also in op-eration six motor driven freight cars, with motors of the same capacity butgeared for a slower speed, and six fiftyton freight locomotives with four 150horse power motors each. The com-pany has recently ordered eight 72-tonfreight locomotives of similar design, which are each to be supplied with four175 motors. When these are re-ceived this road will have a freightequipment exceeding its passengerequipment by one-third, in number ofmotive power units, and by nearly two-thirds in horse power capacity,
