Climate change researcher. Scientist slicing an ice core sample from Antarctica for analysis. He is wearing protective clothing and a mask to minimise contamination of the sample. Chemical analysis of ice cores can reveal changes in climate over several hundreds of years. Air trapped in the firn (the upper layer of frozen snow) is untainted by the atmospheric air, and thus provides direct evidence of what the composition of the atmosphere was at the time when the firn froze. Studying how the atmosphere has changed can lead to better models for predicting how it will change in the future.
