Sir Howard Grubb (1844-1931), Irish telescope engineer, in Trinity College Dublin robes. The Grubb Telescope Company was begun by Howard Grubb's father, Thomas Grubb (1800-1878), who was joined by Howard in 1864. He designed and built the 27-inch refractor for the Vienna Observatory, which was the largest refractor in the world at the time. He was also credited with perfecting the design of the periscope during the First World War. In 1887 he was knighted by Queen Victoria and became Vice President of the Royal Dublin Society between 1893 and 1922.
