The British chemist Sir William Jackson Pope, 1870-1939. Pope worked on the production of optically active compounds containing no assymetric carbon atoms. He managed to make optically active compounds centred on asymmetric atoms of nitrogen, sulhpur, selenium and tin. During World War I Pope developed methods for manufacturing mustard gas in quantity. He accepted a knighthood for his work in 1919.
