Camels at the west gate ('Gate of Conciliation') of Jiayugguan's historical (1372) fort in Gansu province, China. The fort was dubbed the ‘Impregnable Defile Under Heaven’ and was once an important bastion of Chinese defence and the last stop on the Silk Road as travellers passed out of China heading into the ancient 'wild west'. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage site
