In this diagram of the tendons on the dorsum of the index, the 1st lumbrical is seen to be inserted into the radial side of the base of the terminal phalanx. Into the ulnar side of the same phalanx are inserted slips from the ex- tensor indicis and 1st palmar interosseous. A second slip from each of these muscles is inserted into the base of the 2nd phalanx, along with the indicator tendon of the extensor communis. All these tendons are normally held in position by the dorsal aponeurosis. The 1st dorsal interosseous muscle has only one slip of insertion, into the 1st phalanx. Fig. 2. The terminal phalanx of the middle finger receives the 2nd lumbrical, a slip from the 3rd lumbrical. and a slip from the 3rd dorsal interosseous muscle. Into the second phalanx are inserted the second tendon of the extensor communis, and slips from the 2nd and 3rd dorsal interossei. These latter muscles each give a slip to the 1st phalanx, quite separate from the dorsal aponeurosis surrounding the other tendons. Fig. 3. In the ring finger, slips from the 3rd lumbrical, 2nd palmar inter- osseous, and 4th dorsal interosseous muscles find insertion into the terminal phalanx, whilst the annular tendon of the extensor communis and slips from the interossei pass to the 2nd phalanx. The main insertion of the dorsal interosseous is again into the first phalanx. Fig. 4. The abductor minimi digiti, in series with the dorsal interossei has its principal insertion into the first phalanx of the little finger. Slips also pass from it to the two distal phalanges. The slip to the terminal phalanx is joined by a slip from the extensor minimi digiti, and with these are inserted the 4th lumbrical and a slip from the 3rd palmar interosseous. The second phalanx receives slips from the abductor minimi digiti, the 3rd palmar interosseous, and the extensor minimi digiti, together with the entire 4th tendon of t
