Hereford Cathedral, South West view
After its early history, beginning from the sixth century, the cathedral of the Virgin Mary and St Ethelbert was partly rebuilt in 1079 by Robert Lozing (Robert of Lorraine), his work being completed by Bishop Reynelm some six decades later. The cathedral fabric was maintained and enlarged by a number of notable prelates, in particular Bishop d’Aquablanca and Bishop Cantilupe and subsequently by others well into the 15th century. The cathedral also suffered damage during the Civil War and its tower collapsed in 1786. Although it is one of the smaller of the English cathedrals its architecture is much admired and it contains a remarkable Mappa Mundi from the 13th century and a medieval ‘chained library’.
