A woman taking part in maypole dancing at the Marsden Cuckoo Festival, Yorkshire, England, UK

A colourfully dressed woman takes part in a maypole dance at the Cuckoo Festival, which is held annually in the village of Marsden, UK. Marsden is situated at the foot of the Pennine Hills in West Yorkshire and holds a festival every Spring; this is based on a legend common to some other English villages, where someone is said to have built a wall to hold the first cuckoo of Spring and thereby keep the good weather. According to legend the cuckoo flew away before the last course of stone was laid. The Marsden Cuckoo Festival is celebrated with a street parade headed by a giant cuckoo, craft stalls, music, a duck race on the River Colne and traditional morris dancing and maypole dancing.
