Balloons were made in the eighteenth century,but they, like the sailing vessel, were at the mercy of everywind. European inventors were quick to apply the lightgas-engine to the balloon, changing its shape so that it wouldbe more manageable. The hghtness of the gas-engine madepossible what seems the most marvelous invention of all. TheWorlds Fair or Columbian Exposition at Chicago in 1893was intended partly to celebrate the 400th anniversary ofthe discovery of America.
