Balloons were made in the eighteenth century,but they, like the sailing vessel, were at the mercy of everywind. European inventors were quick to apply the lightgas-engine to the balloon, changing its shape so that it wouldbe more manageable. The hghtness of the gas-engine madepossible what seems the most marvelous invention of all. In1905 the Wright Brothers, after patient trials, made a suc-cessful aeroplane or An Aeroplane 472 THE NEW METHODS OF WORKING Expositions. — Several times since the Centennial Expo-sition other expositions have been held, which gave thepeople opportunities to see what rapid progress was beingmade, not only by Americans but also by all nations. TheWorlds Fair or Columbian Exposition at Chicago in 1893was intended partly to celebrate the 400th anniversary ofthe discovery of America.
