Neutron counters testing. Engineer testing and calibrating a series of handheld neutron counters. Neutrons are a hazardous and damaging form of radiation, requiring specialised detectors. Neutron radiation is most often the result of nuclear fission or nuclear fusion. These are the NMS017NG model from John Caunt Scientific. The moderator in each detector consists of a 208-millimetre diameter polyethylene sphere. Neutrons are thermalised by the moderator and then detected by a spherical He-3 SP9 proportional counter.
