He seemed to be worthy of his position aschief, and was desirous of establishing anEuropean settlement near the mouth of theOutanata. Unfortunately, the river, al-though a noble stream, has a sandbar acrossthe mouth which effectually prevents vesselsof even light draught from passing except athigh water. The people in general werewonderfully honest, not displaying thethievish propensities which cause the visitsof many savage tribes to be so even brought on board articles whichhad been accidentally left on shore.
