Light micrograph of Paramecium sp., a ciliate protozoan, abundant in water and soil. Beating the fine hairs, called cilia, which cover the external surface, provides the cell with a means of locomotion. The bacteria on which it feeds are ingested through a permanent mouth and then digested within temporary food vacuoles which float around the cell cytoplasm. The osmotic potential of the internal enviroment is regulated by contractile vacuoles which control the flow of water across the cell membrane. Magnification: x120 at 35mm size.
