View NW of a roller house (winding house) on the third level up of the A1 Incline which brought slate from the stepped working levels of the Dinorwic quarries down to the railway yard, Llanberis, Wales, UK. The Table Incline system used two rail tracks & a roller or brake drum to lower loaded wagons whose weight pulled up up empty ones. Two cables were wrapped around the roller in opposite directions such that one unrolled while the other wound in. The downhill speed of the cradles keeping the wagons horizontal was controlled by a Banksman operating a large wooden brake on the drum. The A1 Incline is included in the Vivian Quarry Trails but is just outside the E boundary of Padarn Country Park. The Dinorwig Slate Quarry Mountain Landscape is part of The Slate Landscape of Northwest Wales which became the UK's 32nd UNESCO World Heritage Site on 28 July 2021.
