The villages now rank-ing among the growing towns of the county hadnot been platted or, if already laid out in lots,were of very insignificant proportions. Thecounty, however, was beginning to drawpermanent settlers of fine character andthe resources of the soil were becomingincreasingly known as the result of studyand experiment. On first coming to this countyhe assisted his father, James C, in the cultiva-tion of the ranch situated one mile from Ingle-wood, known then as the old ranch place of DanFreeman, and later personally operated by himself. After the death of his father. HISTORICAL AND BIOGRAPHICAL RECORD. 1065 he took charge of the tract of three hundred andfifty acres, under cultivation to grain, com andalfalfa, and retained its management until No-vember I, 1906, since which time he has beenengaged in the hay and feed business in LosAngeles, at the corner of Vernon and Centralavenues. Hill county in the state of Texas is Mr. Web-sters native place and May 23, 1871, the dateof his birth. The family is of old southern line-age. His father was born and reared in Ala-bama, but at an early age accompanied othermembers of the family to Texas, at that time anew country with few American settlers. Se-curing a large tract of land, he took up stock-raising and general ranch pursuits, and for manyyears remained in that state extensively engagedin agricultural affairs.
