View SW of Strichen recumbent stone circle, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, UK, with the ruin of Strichen House, built 1821 by Lord Lovat, to the rear. The circle has been damaged, adapted; removed & restored, incorrectly, several times. From 1979-82 the site was properly excavated & reconstructed using the original stones in their correct stone holes, initially by Aubrey Burl & then Phil Abramson & Ian Hampsher-Monk. The stones are graded up in height to the flanking stones & recumbent at the SSE aligned to the southern maximum moonrise. Remains of an earlier timber ring were discovered at the centre along with a ring-cairn & burial cist. A female cremation in an urn was discovered beside a stone hole & a cupmarked stone buried in a stone-lined pit. Quartz was smashed on site on an anvil stone, placed in an arc opposite the recumbent & scattered throughout the stony bank linking the uprights.
