Lictors with Fasces

In ancient Roman times, lictors were the attendants who carried the fasces in front of the high-ranking public officials who had the right to these insignia. Fasces was the Latin name for a bundle of rods tied together with a red strap and enclosing an ax with its head outside. The ax was removed in the city of Rome. The fasces represented the power of the magistrates. This illustration represents a relief dating to the time of the ancient Romans.
