Queens of B. tanguticus are morphologicaly very distinctive (discussed in Williams, 1991), so much so that Pittioni (1939J) considered the species warranted a subgenus of its own. The male remains apparently unknown (the spe- cies occurs at high altitudes in Tibet [= Xizang] and is very rare in collections), so that its precise relation- ships are difficult to resolve at present and a separate subgenus seems premature.
