Newsgirl and newsboy, taken in New York City by photographer Alice Austen (1866-1952), of Staten Island, circa 1893. Austen took more than 9,000 photographs in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. She lost her life savings during the Depression and had to live in a poorhouse. Her photographs did not garner much attention until the very end of her life.
