Benn Pitman, shorthand inventor. Magazine cover from October 1911 featuring British-born US populariser of shorthand Benjamin Pitman (1822-1910), also known as Benn Pitman. At the time, shorthand was known as phonography, as given in the magazine title ('The Phonographic Magazine'). The cover shows Pitman in 1854, from a daguerreotype provided by his sister Mary Pitman Webster. Pitman, who later developed a career in decorative art and wood carving and engraving, is shown with a board and paint brush. This is volume 25, issue 10 of the magazine.
