French and US aviation pioneers. From left, they are French aviator Jacques Benjamin de Lesseps (1883-1927), US aviator Glenn Hammond Curtiss (1878-1930), and French aviator Hubert Latham (1883-1912). De Lesseps was the second man to cross the English Channel by aeroplane after Bleriot, doing so in May 1910. Curtiss made the first long-distance flight in the USA (May 1910). Latham attempted to fly across the English Channel at the same time as Bleriot in July 1909, but failed, ditching into the sea. This photograph, which dates from 1910, is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries.
