Mr. Lofland is a young man of the strictest in-tegrity, possessing a high order of business qualifi-cations, and is firmly established in the confidenceof the people, as the responsible position to whichhe has lately been chosen clearly indicates. i C-rp^>HOMPSON BALDWIN, deceased, was a pio-fm£^ neer of this county of 1846, and was born^J^ in Champaign County, Ohio, Feb. 10, 1816. i July 22,1837, he was married to Sophronia Phelps,who was born in Ohio, March 28, 1821, and is a : daughter of Sylvester and Maria Phelps. (See theirbiography elsewhere in this volume.) Mr. andMrs. Baldwin came to Iowa in 1846, locating on I section 13, of Richland Township, and here he fol-lowed the occupation of farming until his which took place Jan. 15, 1880. Mrs. Baldwin yetsurvives, and resides on the homestead. The fam-ily consisted of eight children; only two are nowliving: Rosaltha, wife of James R. Grace, died , 1862, at the age of twenty-three years; Sylves-ter resides in this township; Elizabeth Imogenedied March 20, 1860; Nancy M. is the wife of Oh-tavius Hull and lives at Stockton, Cal.; Carolinedied Nov. 24, 1874, Edna, July 20, 1872; Marley,Aug. 10, 1880, and Hannah J., July 24, 1873. Mr. Baldwin was a very ardent supporter of theRepublican party, but refused all offers of prefer-ment and devoted his time entirety to his privatebusiness. At the time of his death he owned about400 acres of land. It is one of the
