Coiled-coil domain, illustration

Illustration of a coiled-coil domain from a ubiquitin E3 ligase. Ubiquitin ligases are enzymes that tag proteins for degradation by attaching a ubiquitin molecule to them. In order to attach the ubiquitin molecule the enzyme needs to form a dimer (a complex of two identical molecules). The coiled-coil domain is essential to this process.
