This consists in cutting off part ofthe flesh, and hanging it up on a tree or atall stick, as an offering to the deities, ac-companying his proceedings with certainmystic prayers and invocations. Most women are forbidden to eat humanflesh, and so are some men and all youngchildren. When the latter reach a certainage, they are permitted to become eatersof human flesh, and are inducted into theirnew privileges by the singing of chants andsongs, the meaning of which none of theinitiates understand, and which, it is prob-able, are equally a mystery to the priesthimself who chants them.
