Asteroid deflection. Computer artwork of rockets firing from the surface of a near-Earth asteroid. The rockets provide thrust, which nudges the asteroid away from an Earth-bound trajectory. In theory it would be possible to deflect a 1 kilometre asteroid, given 30 years warning. It is thought that a large asteroid impact caused the mass loss of life some 65 million years ago that included the extinction of the dinosaurs.
