The Alberta tar sands are the largest industrial project on the planet, and the world's most environmentally destructive. The tar sands are responsible for the second fastest rate of deforestation on the planet. second only to that of the Amazon Rainforest. Each square Km of Boreal forest supports 500 breeding pairs of migrant birds, as well as being home to Wolf, Lynx, Cougar, Black Bear, Grizzly Bear, Wolverine, Bison, Moose, Caribou, Beaver. It is also an important carbon sink.
