British established Fort William and Mary on New Castle Island to defend entrance to Piscataqua River and Portsmouth Harbor. Known as the "castle" the fort was manned by soldiers of the Province of NH. Fourth order lens remains active in tower today. Friends of Portsmouth Harbor Light upkeeps it today along with Whaleback Light in Maine. Was automated in 1961.
