A family-run flagship store selling handmade Burano lace of ladies' and gents' clothes, linen garments and household items at the Martina Vidal Venezia store and headquarters in Burano, one of the small islands dotted around the Venetian lagoon near Venice and Torcello in the Veneto region of northern Italy. Burano is world-known for its needle lace-making, like its close neighbour, Murano, for its hand-cut glass. The making of lace, first stemmed from the idea of making and repairing fishing nets as Burano was a fishing village in the 15th century. At the same time, bobbin lace began in Flanders, a region of Belgium in northern Europe. Burano's other primary economy is tourism for its quaint picturesque narrow pedestrian-free streets, alongside narrow canals lined with brightly coloured former fishermen’s houses on either side. It's said that several hundred years ago, whilst fishing in poor visibility due to the swirling sea mist, fishermen painted their houses in bright colours so that they could be seen from a distance. Burano still retains the largest community of local fishermen and continues to restock the island’s restaurants. To supplement the fishermen’s income, they also offer fishing tours to tourists. Burano is thought to have been founded in the 5th century by refugees from the Roman city of Altino, fleeing from the Barbarians. Some settled in nearby Murano to set up the world-renowned Murano Glass.
