China: Empress Xiao Yuan Jing (1427-1507), consort of the 7th Ming Emperor Jingtai (r. 1449-1457). Hanging scroll painting, 15th-17th century. Empress Wang (1427-1507), formally Empress Xiaoyuanjing, was the consort of the Jingtai Emperor of the Ming Dynasty. She bore him two daughters but no son, and was subsequently demoted and stripped of her titles when secondary Consort Hang produced an heir. She lived a quiet life after demotion, and survived her husband's death in 1457 when the rest of his concubines and spouses were ordered to commit suicide.
