Snowden, a company commander on Iwo Jima and the senior surviving officer of the battle. Snowden, a company commander on Iwo Jima and the senior surviving officer of the battle. Snowden was in Guam to participate in the annual memorial, called the Reunion of Honor, held on location in Iwo Jima. During the interview shared stories about Iwo Jima and explained that he holds a special place in his heart for Navy Corpsmen and the Naval Hospital Guam. Medical Staff from the hospital cared for him when he was injured during the battle of Iwo Jima that sent him off the island. Their care allowed him to return to the battle, where he says he needed to be, fighting next to his brothers in arms. Snowden also served with the 3d Marine Division on Guam serving with the 3d Marines and 9th Marines respectively until December 1945. Snowden retired from the Marine Corps after more than 37 years of service, the last years of which he served as Chief of Staff, Headquarters Marine Corps.
