Isokon Flats, Lawn Road, Belsize Park, 1933 -34. Front elevation before restoration. Architect: Wells Coates
The Lawn Road Flats was the first modern block of flats in London and has been described as an ‘ideogram for a whole generation of English architects’. It was designed in the mid-thirties by Wells Coates and commissioned by Jack Pritchard, the founder of plywood furniture company Isokon. Both men were fascinated with the problems of city dwelling and The Lawn Road Flats was their solution. It presented a completely new way of living: space-efficient, fully-fitted studio apartments with communal parking, social and recreational areas.
