Schelte Adamsz. Bolswert. Forest Crossed by a Stream, from The Small Landscapes. 1633–1645. Flanders. Engraving on cream laid paper Schelte Adams Bolswert’s engravings display a mastery of technique; he was able to achieve the effect of three-dimensionality through his use of crosshatched lines, resulting in a wide array of light and dark tones. Simultaneously, Bolswert added depth to his prints, making it seem as though the viewer could physically enter into the scenes.
