. Breeder and sportsman. Horses. 14 THE BREEDER AND SPORTSMAN [Saturday, January 7, 1911. AMERICAN MULES IN SOUTH AFRICA. There is an increasing demand for mules in South Africa, and just now a large number are being imported from the United States. The Ameri- can mule being regarded as superior to the animals brought here from Ar- gentina and other countries. Recently a shipment of 100 mules was received from the United States for the use of the Johannesburg mu- nicipality, and a contract has just been entered into with a local agent for 200 more, also for the municipality, all of which are to come from the United States. The first lot was shipped by a firm in Jersey City, the order having been placed with New York exporters. Shipment was made at Montreal, Can- ada. It is specified that the mules pur- chased must be 14 u hands high, deep girth, good bone, and short legged. The ages range from 4 to 7 years. It is understood that the contract price paid for these mules is slightly under $250 each, delivered at Cape Town, where they must pass the inspection of a veterinarian. The municipal au- thorities consider either the Missouri or Kentucky mule the best suited for that country. Instances are cited where these mules, after nine or ten years' service for the municipality, have been sold locally at §90 to $140. Study commercial fertilizers, and become familiar with their composi- tion srd use. When prcperlv under- stood snd intelligent1 y used, they 3re factors in increasing the yield, and in building up the soil.
