Pumpkin stem. Light micrograph of a section through the stem of a pumpkin (Cucurbita pepo) plant. At centre are tracheid cells, part of the xylem tissue that transports water and mineral nutrients throughout the plant. The tracheid cell walls are strengthened with lignin (pink rings), which provides structural support for the stem. At right are parenchyma cells (blue), which store water and food for the plant. Magnification: x37 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
