He was born September 15,1789. Judge Cooper had bought thousands ofacres of land, and the people in the little settle-ment were very proud of the beautiful homewhich he built on the shores of the lake, and wereglad to name the village Cooperstown in hishonor. Judge Cooper called his home OtsegoHall, and it was one of the finest places in thecountry. In those days there were real Indians roamingthe forests, and they were not all bad Indians, sothe Cooper boys learned many things from them— things which the Boy Scouts of to-day have tolearn from books.
