Hans Holbein the Younger (1497-1543), outstanding artist of German Renaissance, painted this portrait of Erasmus in 1523.

Hans Holbein the Younger (1497-1543) was an outstanding artist of German Renaissance. He spent early half of life in Basel, where he was friends with Erasmus, whose Praise of Folly he illustrated and of whom he painted many portraits. He became painter to Henry VIII in 1535. Among his best paintings are George Gisze, The Ambassadors, Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleves, Sir Richard Southwell, and Sir Henry Wyatt. This painting, titled Erasmus, dates to 1523. Pallid skin, graying hair, dark clothes, and brown paneling go to the making of wonderful harmony.
