ELECTRIC RAILWAY GAZETTE. 171 The car sheds, of which there are three, are locatedon Albert Street, each building being sixty-six feetby two hundred feet, built of brick, with iron trussedroofs. The repair shops and a very commodious suiteof offices are situated in one of these buildings. The company transports all mail matter between thepost office and railway depots and carries the city lettercarriers, under agreement with the Dominion Govern-ment. This service was begun in October, 1893, and wasthe first of its kind on this continent, as is now wellknown. The company estimates that it supplies a population of70,000 persons—50,000 in the city of Ottawa, 13,000 inHull, Quebec, and 7,000 from the surrounding its existence the traffic has been enormouslyincreased. The total receipts of the old horse car com-pany never exceeded $26,000 per annum ; in 1S91 thetotal receipts of the new electric road, which had then Practical Notes for Motormen MAP SHOWING ROUTES OF ELECTRIC RAILWAYS IN OTTAWA. just begun operations, were $71,698, while the totalreceipts of the amalgamated companies for the year end-ing May 31, 1895, were augmented to the considerablesum of $193,991. When we consider that electric cars were first operatedin Ottawa in June, 1891, and that with the extensions putin this season there will be 29 miles of rapid transit trackscovering its principal thoroughfares, we may form someidea of the phenomenal development in street railwaymatters which has been wrought by electrical science, andit becomes evident that the deadly trolley is, after all,an institution of some considerable benefit and comfort tohumanity. BY GEORGE T. HANCHETT. Sparking at the Commutator.—Sparking at the brushesof a railway motor is a very common occurrence and isalways more or less destructive to the commutator. Inmost railway motors the brushes are rigidly set and admitof no ready adjustment except that of press
