In 1877 he succeeded JohnSherman in the Senate^ In 1881 he wasappointed associate justice of the UnitedStates Supreme Court. He died March 21,1889, leaving the reputation of being a greatlawyer and a most lovable man. In personhe was tall, manly and approachable toeverybody. If he had lived, said SenatorPayne, he would have been the foremostjurist in theHand. Another said, Fewstronger men have been born: he embodiedextraordinary powers, and with him Re-ligion was a worship and not a show. William S. Groesbeck was born July24, 1815, in New York city; was educatedto the law and came to Cincinnati. In 1851was a member of the State ConstitutionalConvention; in 1852 one of the commission.
