At top is the lower end of the femur (thigh bone). At bottom are the upper ends of the fibula (left) and tibia (right), the two lower leg bones. At centre is the oblique popliteal ligament, which connects the femur and tibia. Within this ligament are holes through which nerves and blood vessels pass. This ligament is an extracapsular one (located outside the knee capsule). One of the thigh muscles is shown (semi-transparent). The right knee is at right.
