There is a great difference between here & Iowa, in the vegetation, here it looks like midsummer, while in Iowa there is hardly any thing green visible yet, I have seen corn 6 in. high, and have been told that the season is later than usual here. But this is undoubtedly the poorest country I have ever seen, the timber as a general thing is not much if any better, than in Iowa, while the soil is poor, Oh dear how poor, I presume tho ? that there are better parts of the State than this. I was in hopes I would have got a letter from you again by this time, but have not, I wrote to you not many days ago, and hope you get all my letters in due time. ? There has been nothing done yet, except some skirmishing almost every day, yesterday I saw some 40 or 50 prisoners that had been taken, the way we distinguish the Secesh is from their butternut colored clothes, and I have taken such a distaste to that color, that if I ever get back home again, I will work hard to keep from wearing butternut clothes again. ? It is generally believed that there will not be much of a fight here, it is thought by some that they are evacuating Corinth, if that be the case, we will have no fight here, rumor says that there has been a battle at Yorktown, where we took a large amt. of prisoners, and another report is that New Orleans is in our possession, if these things are all
